How much does a lifeguard earn?
Lifeguards keep bathers safe in indoor and outdoor pools, at lakes and beaches: they watch the water, intervene when needed, rescue and give first aid – often for municipalities, pool operators, DLRG or Wasserwacht. Entry is via lifeguard awards and specialist courses, not a classic dual apprenticeship. Gross pay depends on region, collective agreements (e.g. TVöD in public pools), season, shift and weekend allowances, and full-time versus seasonal work. As a guide, working lifeguards in Germany in 2026 often earn about €2,400–€2,950 gross per month (full-time equivalent); during courses, placements and induction around €720–€1,020 is typical if pay is provided.
Salary by region (gross/month)
Guide figures as of 2026. The training column means typical pay or expense allowance during courses, placements and induction (e.g. DLRG/Wasserwacht, pool briefing) – pay is not always provided. Qualified means working lifeguards in pool, lake or beach service in full-time equivalent. Actual pay depends on collective agreements, employer, region, season, shift and weekend allowances, hours and qualification and is not a guarantee.

Job and everyday work
A lifeguard works at the interface of prevention and emergency response: continuous water surveillance, clear communication with guests and team, and calm, fast action in accidents. The role demands fitness, attention and resilience – often in shift and seasonal work under sun, noise and high visitor numbers.
- Watch water areas, pool edges and swimmers; spot hazards early and intervene preventively.
- In emergencies raise the alarm, rescue, give first aid and prepare handover to ambulance or hospital.
- Check rescue gear, first-aid kit and radio; keep the logbook, visitor rules and hygiene requirements.
- Remind guests of rules, de-escalate conflicts and coordinate with shift leads and technical staff.
- On beach or lake duty assess weather, current and visibility; use boat, jet ski or rescue board when qualified.
- Shift, weekend and seasonal work plus fitness and focus under sun, noise and crowds are typical.
